Conflicts of Interest in Science
Ford's generosity

Hi everybody:

I own quite a bit of Ford stock, so I feel that I am entitled to comment in this fashion about the following business news report......

It is another example -- of many, many that are occurring in our society these days -- whereby industry $$$$$$$ seep into positions of influence and (indeed!!) control of American science, research and technology.....

Even our best academic and research institutions (Georgia Tech is certainly one) are not impervious to the blandishments (or the prospects) of HUGE $$$$$$$ endowments from industry ... such as you see below.

The list of such BIG $$$$$$$ donors would be virtually a list of America's five hundred biggest corporations in all the major industries: General Electric, AT&T, Microsoft, Exxon, Mobile Oil, Motorola, Monsanto Chemical, ad infinitum....  All the "big guys" that we now see in control of our oligarchic government as well ... through the influence of their $$$$$$$ in a political system that has no "rules" to prevent it.....  We have talked about that many times on this list.

It will surprise no-one when I suggest that Ford's generosity in this $10 million "gift" cannot be said to be purely "philanthropic."

In making such "contributions," ALL OF THE MANY BIG $$$$$$$ CORPORATIONS (who do the same as Ford) are making "investments" as well as tax-deductible contributions.  They have expectations of future "returns" in one form or another, that will, of course, enhance their "bottom line." If they did not -- they would not do it ... and their stockholders would not stand for it!!!

But, the truly NEGATIVE IMPACT that "I" perceive in this surreptitious seduction practice is the way it affects the academic institutions themselves!!!!  The so-called "independent" "objective" "scientific" seats of learning and research that receive this kind of industry largesse ... to the point, in fact, that they often become dependent (opiated) on it!!!  It can become very much like heroin or opium or tobacco.....

Not for long should their research be expected to remain independent or objective in the face of such $$$$$$$$; upon which they may also become dependent to maintain their "life style" in research; the support of their higher and higher paid staffs and bigger and bigger research projects that they would not want to lose to another competing institution.......

Without really intending to -- they become a sort of "partner" with their benefactors.....  In the future, it will be that much harder for them EVEN TO CONDUCT research -- much less uncover undesirable results -- that their benefactor MIGHT object to!!! Clean air research, for example......!!  Or research touching upon the health effects of the cellular phone technology!!!!

And -- just think about the impact on their rival academic institutions!!!

Will an MIT or Yale, for example, be comfortable conducting research activity that might undermine ITS CHANCES to obtain a Ford or General Motors (or Motorola) $10 million bonanza that they see going to Georgia Tech???  Frequently such "gifts" are many times that. They are (too) much sought after in the academic world.....

I have little doubt that this insidious process has been very much a factor undermining the quality of EMF research in America ... as I have been closely observing it over the past five or six years......  I know of only one major electrical engineering school in America that is not virtually OWNED lock, stock, and barrel -- by the electrical industry......

With the exception of Penn State University (I have posted their paper in the "EMF ??" file on my website), every electrical engineering school in America is SCARED TO DEATH to suggest that there may be health problems OF ANY KIND with electrical (EMF) electromagnetic exposure.

Yet, their graduates -- and the lineman who climb the poles -- are becoming increasingly aware of higher rates of cancer and other health problems in their work community.....  AND, they wonder why THEIR academic institutions (THEIR schools) are remaining silent....??  As the statistical evidence mounts of cancers and other problems for those who work with electricity
on a close and constant basis.....

While you read the story of Ford's generosity below -- think upon these matters.....
