Residential Electromagnetic fields cause avoidable childhood leukaemia
Dr Neil Cherry, Senior Lecturer, Lincoln University
A paper has been published this week in a major medical journal, "Medical Hypotheses", whose major author is Dr Sam Milham, Epidemiologist for Washington State Department of Health. This paper shows conclusively that electrification of homes during last century caused a new leukaemia peak occur in children aged between 2 and 4 years. This occurred country by country and state by state as domestic reticulation of electric power was extended. This new age-related peak occurred in the UK in 1920, the U.S. in the 1930's and in other countries as they reticulated power. In the Arab community in the Gaza Strip it occurred in the 1970's. In the United States it occurred in the black communities later than the white communities because they were later getting reticulated power. By 1950 the U.S. had a range of levels of reticulation. The childhood leukaemia peak rose in direct proportion to the percentage of electric reticulation.
The authors conclude that the childhood leukaemia peak of common acute lymphoblastic leukaemia (cALL) is attributable to residential electrification. 75% of childhood cALL and 60 % of all childhood leukaemia is preventable. The electric and magnetic fields that initially caused this cancer are very small because the early electrification of homes in the U.S. was used for lighting, the radio and ironing. For white children in the U.S. their childhood leukaemia rate at aged 3 years, rose from less than 2 per 100,000 in 1920 to over 8 per 100,000 in 1960. Most of this increase is attributed to the electrification.
The identified mechanism is reduced melatonin that impairs the performance of T-cells and B-cells leading to lymphoblastic and other leukaemias.
A study published in 1998 shows that for children in New Zealand with magnetic fields in their bedroom of 2 mG or more the leukaemia rate is 12 times higher than average. When the daily average magnetic field was used the leukaemia relative rate went from 1.0 for fields <1 mG, to 1.5 for 1-2 mG and up to 3.3 for ?2 mG. Many other studies from around the world show that the closer you live to powerlines the higher the childhood cancer rises. Along with this there are increases in brain tumours, suicide, depression, Alzheimer's Disease heart disease, diabetes, asthma and many other disease, that also occur in "electrical industries". This latest study shows that domestic fields also significantly enhance all EMF associated diseases and death.
This newly published research, backed by a host of other studies, conclusively shows that much of the illness and death for children and adults is caused by electric and magnetic fields at home and at work. We can save a great deal of illness, stress and heart ache and major medical bills, by cleaning up our electromagnetic environments. Prevention is much better and cheaper than seeing cures.
