Subject: Reviewing files -- this one (about EMFCALC) is
more important
than I knew at the time....(Guru)

Hi everybody:

.....Subsequent developments in the U.K. have made guru's comments below MUCH MORE prescient than I suspected at the time.....

I hope everyone will take the time to read and understand the "gist" of guru's criticism of ANYTHING in this EMF "science" which attempts (deliberately or inadvertently) to equate "magnetic field" with the whole of the EMF (non-ionizing radiation) phenomenon..... Recently, the Repacholi and Ahlbom commentary made substantially the same point.....

Also -- the whole 'implication' of this aspect gives more credence to Professor Henshaw's findings (re: aerosols effect) recently reported by Bristol University in the U.K.  On balance, it seems to me that the results of Henshaw's research is far more important in significance toward explaining the EMF hazards "near" power lines than the recent "U.K. Childhood Cancer" study, reported in Lancet and championed (apparently) by Sir Richard Doll.....
Cheerio.....

......Richard and ED:

I believe it is more correct to say that "Ed's table" (message below) permits "magnetic field" calculations......  Now, if we only knew the "magnetic field" to be the critical metric.......???? There are other potentially more "guilty" metrics to be considered -- not to exclude the electrical "ground current" aspects, which convey a magnetic field component of their own......?????  And, of course, the electrical field, itself, has yet to be exonerated.....  (Or the transients, harmonics, aerosol build-up, etc.)

Remember ... the final versions of the NIEHS (RAPID) study carefully blurred the fact that their conclusions were based on "proximity" -- nearness -- exposure (rather than any actual measurable metric) ... because (they admitted) they did not know which of the "metrics" counted most....!!  (In their conclusions, they TOTALLY ignored and failed to even mention the "popular" 2 or 3 miligauss exposure criterion......???)

One of the 'genuine' outcomes of that study effort -- I believe -- was that  the TWA (time weighted average) of the "magnetic field" was NOT a very useful metric to rely on......!!!  That they failed to make that conclusion more explicit, reflected their embarrassment(?) that they had -- throughout the whole project -- relied on it almost totally!!!

(Bureaucracies do not do a good job of admitting their own errors.....)

Thus, the fact that Ed's table is predicting only one metric (the magnetic field) is of some concern to me.....  It may be a useful 'surrogate' -- but, at this point, we simply don't know.....

Cheerio.....  (Still, the distinction I am making is terribly important -- I believe....)

Subject: EMFCALC

I have just placed Ed Maxey's EMFCALC program on the Bridlewood Electromagnetic Fields (EMFs) Information Service website for download.

The program could prove very helpful to any who face the prospect of a new power line being placed in their neighborhood. It permits rapid calculation of the EMF exposure which the power line specifications will create along the line corridor. It also permits prospective buyers to calculate the EMF before purchasing a home near a power line.

EMFCALC is about 50k and may be run from DOS or from the RUN command in Windows3x, 95 or 98. There is no provision for a hard copy print out, but this can be had via the MARK and COPY function if one is using Windows95 or Windows 98.
